Female genital mutilation (FGM) comprises all procedures involving partial or total removal of the external female genitalia or other injury to the female genital organs for non-medical reasons (WHO, UNICEF, UNFPA, 1997).
It always saddens me when I read articles or see television programs about FGM.
Seen from a human rights perspective, the practice reflects deep-rooted inequality between the sexes, and constitutes an extreme form of discrimination against women. (World Health Organization)
More importantly it is a painful and traumatic experience and I see it as yet more suffering for the sake of religion and social culture.
Please see the attached link about Global strategy to stop health-care providers from performing female genital mutilation
and further information about this subject from the World Health Organization.
